A Guide to Sushi, Part 2

So you have a friend, who has never tried sushi, and doesn’t want to. Eating sushi to them is like asking them to club a baby seal; bloody, messy and just not right. So you have to ease them in. Give a guiding hand, start simple. The last thing you want to do is try to make your friend eat sea urchin roe as an introduction to sushi. Unless you want to watch them choke and gag on it.

First thing to consider are allergies. This is important. Quite a few people out there have shellfish allergies. So know ahead of time what your friend is allergic to. Their first experience with sushi should not be a fatal one. It would be tragic and you would have a lot of explaining to do.

Second, start off with an appetizer or something to set the mood. If you can get a person to buy in on an aspect of ethnic cuisine, you’ll have a better chance of getting him or her to try something truly different. Miso soup, dumplings, salad with ponzu dressing, things that at least look familiar. Ok, onto the sushi menu.

Start off simple. Do the California roll, everyone’s heard of it and you can assure the person that the crab is actually a crab stik. Explain the aspects of the roll they are about to eat. Have them lightly dip in soy sauce. Next, offer a cucumber roll…and if they like that, then spice it up a little with an oshinko roll, normally pickled radish; very crunchy.

If they like that and are willing to go a step further, offer a final roll. Again, keep it simple, offer a tuna or salmon roll. They’ll probably go with the salmon roll because salmon always looks like salmon…tuna, in this case, is red and not the bland color when it comes from a can. Until your friend gets comfortable with more complex types of sushi, avoid introducing sashimi. Unagi (freshwater eel) is one of the best things out there, but it looks like you shouldn’t even pick it up, much less eat it.

And there you have it, a hopeful plan to get more of your friends on the sushi kick!

SIDE NOTES:

Ok, the anime bender didn’t happen, but perhaps this week. Next time, I want to revisit an older topic…fanfiction!

A Guide to Sushi, Part One

This week I wanted to get aback a little bit to things Asian, but not necessarily linked to anime and manga or cons. As I was sitting here at the pc, noshing on some store-bought sushi (imitation crab stick used to make a California roll), drowning it in soy sauce to provide some taste to it, I realized how people can be turned off by the thought of eating sushi. I mean, what I was eating wasn’t foul, but really tasteless. Oh yeah…and those who are squeamish about “eating raw fish”. So I thought about how to ease someone into eating sushi.

Before you embark your friend on a journey of culinary decadence that is eating sushi, you may want to explain a few things. Like different forms of sushi, that not all sushi are raw fish and things that might compliment the dishes and certain things you probably shouldn’t do. Let’s start with the different forms of sushi…

Sushi – The most commonly known form. It’s really called Makisushi, or just Maki. They are the rolls that most people see. Usually, the fish and other ingredients are wrapped by rice with a seaweed outer layer, or the rice is sprinkled with sesame seeds.

Nigiri- Nigiri is an individual piece of fish or other items placed on top of a formed lump of rice, held sometimes with a thin strip of seaweed.

Sashimi – Sashimi is just the fish. Nothing else. But that cut of fish is supposed to be from the best part of the fish, the tastiest.

Temaki – Temaki is a hand roll. Basically a cone of seaweed stuffed with fish and rice.

The “easiest’ to eat is Maki. Wrapped up in a nice little, six to eight piece roll, it’s like a little package of yummy goodness.

Not all sushi is uncooked fish. There are vegetable, pickled (oshinko) vegetable and even cooked fish or tempura sushi available. Avocado, cucumber, mushroom and asparagus are popular for use in sushi, either by themselves or with fish. Cooked fish usually deals with salmon (even smoked), sometimes crab and also with shrimp. Tempura is basically deep frying something, therefore, whatever is served as tempura is basically cooked.

The two most common compliments are wasabi, soy sauce and ginger. The way it is presented today is really artificial in nature. Wasabi normally isn’t green (white) nor is ginger pink. It’s how they are made and packaged. Wasabi is actually from a horseradish root native to Japan and VERY spicy. Use sparingly and do NOT mistake it for mint (you will turn red, be unable to breathe and have snot running out of your nose while people point and laugh at you, this personal experience BTW). Soy sauce is just as it sounds. And ginger is sliced from the root and serves as a type palette cleanser between different tastes of fish. Some like to mix a little wasabi in their soy to make a spicy dipping sauce.

Ok, some things you shouldn’t really do. As mentioned before, don’t just chomp down on wasabi; you will pay dearly for it (and if I see it, you can bet you will be posted to YouTube in a manner of moments). Do NOT stab the sushi with your chopsticks or use a fork. It is considered rude and you will be inflicted with bad luck. However…it is NOT impolite to use your hands…it’s accepted that some people just suck with chopsticks; even some Japanese have this problem…

Alright, Part Two will discuss the different type of fish used and what they are called. As well as a sample menu for your reluctant friend who is wary of uncooked fish….

SIDE NOTES:

Fun fact: sushi, the maki and the temaki forms were prepared for farmers and laborers by their wives as lunch. Today, we pay out the nose to eat sushi, but back then (as with many cuisines); what the peasants ate is now what the affluent like to eat and consider it haught cuisine!

I may be going on an anime bender this upcoming week. Compiling my list, will take any and all suggestions, aiming for new stuff…so I can talk about it later!

The Library Needs More Anime!!!

So, I was sitting at my workstation at home, just like I am doing right now, I had just uploaded some Otakon 2010 pictures to the Multiply version of this blog (http://bigstevegearhart.multiply.com/photos/album/4/Otakon_2010 ) and my hands started to shake, my arms were itchy, couldn’t concentrate and I found myself being whiny.

That’s right, I had the anime junkie shuffle going on.

So I did the only thing I could do; rented some anime. The nice thing is that I work for a library. So I can do a free, seven day rental of up to 6 DVD’s! Actually, most of the DVD’s and VHS movies and such are free to anyone with a library card! The advantage of having a free public is to not have to pay, or rather, pay that much for certain things. Oh, BTW, I rented Paprika by the same guy who did Tokyo Godfathers and Tokyo Blue, good stuff!

So, as I looked around the main branch’s Sights and Sounds ( I work in the main branch, it’s called Central, pretty cool if you’re a FMA fan). We’re still in the process of converting our VHS collection to DVD. Many of the DVD’s are two-day, $2 rentals…they are the most current (within the past five years or so) movies, documentaries and stuff. The free DVD section is quite small and so is, alas, the anime section. Not much of a selection.

However, we have a fairly decent sized free foreign movie section. It’s where I first discovered Wong Kar Wei (2046, Fallen Angels, Shanghai Express) and gained appreciation for Asian movies in general (my first Japanese subtitiled movie was A Taxing Lady, go see it!). And most of it is in VHS format and not DVD. It’s not that I don’t have a VHS machine, it’s just that…well VHS is a thing of the past. And we all know that I enjoy Asian music. I have almost nothing here. I tried to find the Yoshida brothers at Central to no avail. J-Pop? Forget it.

Central is the largest of the twenty or so branches in the Enoch Pratt Free Library System of Baltimore. So you can imagine how much less the smaller branches have of anime, manga (which Central is actually doing very well with), Asian films and music. And it isn’t as if there isn’t interest in this. We show free movies, allow anime clubs to meet (for free!) and have periodic workshops (a manga workshop held at the Southeast Branch has been used in several grant proposals).

So, why am I bringing all of this up? Well, I have to admit that for part of it is a selfish need to satisfy my junkie urges…but there are a couple of other real reasons. And it has to do with the fact that this entry is my annual bug you for money for the library.

The overall, never-ending goal for my department and I (our jobs are to raise money) is to raise money so that we can keep the library free for ALL people for the vast majority of services we provide to the public.

On a more detailed note, I would like to make my annoying and meddlesome appeal to you to accomplish two things: increase the amount of anime/manga/Asian movie and music in the overall Pratt Library system of Baltimore, and second, to improve the system’s overall Asian studies; more books, more mediums that are up to date and informative, language skills, more free programs, classes, etc.

And while I would LOVE it if you gave money to my library for these goals, Iwould think it more important to give to your local library system, especially if you live outside of the Baltimore area. And if you do that, I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT!!! Email me at stevegearhart70@hotmail.com.

But if you should live in the area, and/or want to help my library out, here’s a couple of ways you can help. You can send cash, money order or check to:

The Enoch Pratt Free Library
Dept. of Institutional Advancement
400 Cathedral Street
Baltimore, MD 21201

Please be sure to include a note that you want the money to be used Asian Culture Programing (includes Programs and books), to improve/buy new Asian medium for the Sights and Sounds Department, and if you want to increase the anime/manga selections.

If you have, perchance, a credit card, go online here:

http://www.prattlibrary.org/support/give.aspx .

It is a minimum donation of $25 to use the online donation service and again, please be sure to include a note that you want the money to be used Asian Culture Programing (includes Programs and books), to improve/buy new Asian medium for the Sights and Sounds Department, and if you want to increase the anime/manga selections in the field marked “Descriptions”.

Ok, there. I’ve done my annoying please-give-to-the-library-spiel. I promise not to ask again until next year! 

Baccano!

For something a little bit different and fun…I had bought the Baccano! series at Otakon. I enjoy mecha, I still like FMA, even though I still feel the reboot is a tad weak, and nobody can ever wean me off of Patlabor. So, I hearkened back to a previous Otakon and remembered how much I liked Baccano!.

As I have said before, you can ID a pretty good anime when you are at a convention and once the 4 episodes are over, people are wanting more. Baccano! fits into this category. I caught it at Otakon 2009 and saw episodes that are, I believe on the second DVD of the collection.

Baccano! jumps back and forth through in time. It spends a little bit of time in 1711, to show how this small group of people became immortal. But it also bounces around a lot in the 1930’s…in Chicago and aboard a train. The premise (but not the actual beginning of the anime) is that there were a group of travelers aboard a ship, presumably going to the American colonies. These people were conjurers and “alchemists” who, I think were driven away. On the ship, people started dying in a rather horrible fashion, so they did what came naturally to them: conjure up a demon.

The demon gave them an elixir that bestowed immortality upon them. The trick was that they had to use their own names through time, could transfer knowledge by placing a hand on someone’s forehead or kill them by doing the same act and sucking them into themselves. The group decided that only one of them would retain knowledge on how to make the elixir and not to make anymore immortals. One evil gentleman disagreed and started to, of course, sucking people in. He would later be thrown off the ship.

Fast forward to the 1930’s Chicago. The group has gone through time relatively unscathed until the evil Szilard (just sounds evil, doesn’t it?) is finally able to make the elixir on his own…only to have it stolen by accident…setting off a chain of events that involve the Mafia, immortals, a vicious serial killer, a sociopath and his suicidal wife, the FBI and a clandestine intelligence agency (can’t say more on that, it would spoil things) over a number of years between Chicago, a train and New York.

I can’t say anymore than this is really pretty good, but very violent…and kind of twisted in some places. But I can tell you, that a subplot to the whole story revolves around a bumbling Bonnie and Clyde pair of thieves…who are just over the top and hilarious…and gives a new bent on cosplaying!

SIDE NOTES:

As always, please give my vlog some love by going here:

Also, I am doing a little short term project on YouTube called, SixtySecondsSteve. Very simple: I upload a video from the day before that lasts only 60 seconds, give or take a few. There will be one per day until 12/31/10. On New Year’s Day the final video will be uploaded. These vids could be entertaining, boring, informative, mind-numbing…and could be of anything! So click the link below every day to see a new video. I started on 9/10/10 so you need to catch up!

Baltimore Comicon, 2010!

This past weekend I went to the Baltimore Comicon!!!!

Not quite Otakon, but fun, especially if you are a toy or comic book collector. Instead of obsessing on anime…people obsess on comics and things related to them, feeding their own junkie cravings. Make no mistake: comic book fans are just as addicted to their desires at otaku are. It’s just for some, like myself, comic books was simply a gateway drug to the more insidious and all-consuming anime habit!

Seriously, it was a lot of fun. This year was pretty well run. The organizers tried to make things a bit more centralized and easy to get to. All you had to do was got to the Charles Street Lobby (where the water fountains are) to pickup passes or to purchase tickets at the box office. That’s right; there is a box office underneath the escalator. Did you know that? Panels were directly above in the meeting rooms at the top of the escalator. Also, it made it easier to get in and out via the Skywalk.

As always, there were hundreds of people with tote bags, carts loaded with boxes, scurrying from stall to stall, feverishly looking from their list of oh-dear-god-I-must-have-this-to-complete-my-collection items, practically throwing their money at the happy merchants (or their dealer, depending if you view this as an addiction or not). There were quite a few people dressed up; Iron Man, Batman, the Joker, Harlequin, Deadpool, you name it. And the toys…the wonderful toys!!!

Of course, my favorite part is the independent comic book artists. A lot of cool stuff this year. Some real good talent out there! But the thing about this year that was really fun was that I got to bring my nephew to his first comic book convention.

He was a bit overwhelmed.

I would be, too. It’s a lot to take in. I looked down at him after being there for a minute and I saw the look on his face that seemed to suggest data overload. I discovered, however, that while he may not be a comic book aficionado…he may be a collector of toys. He really liked that…and the sword vendors. Can you blame him? What boy doesn’t want to hold a katana blade in his hand?

SIDE NOTES:

Be sure to check out the Comicon vid at my vlog on YouTube (updated weekly). Show it some love by going here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheUnagiObserver

Due to the intervention of things from my real life, I am finding it easier to post on Tuesday evenings now. So, starting from now on, there will be a post every other week on Tuesdays!

I know I keep threatening to show up at Katsucon and never do. But because of the dates this year…I might be able to, finally!!! Woot!!!

Otakon Highlights!

OTAKON 2010!!!!!!

Had a great time this year. Had a new Flip vid camera to use this year, that was pretty cool, my Otakon vids are now in HD! Go here to see them:

http://www.youtube.com/user/bigsteveotaku

I was also pleased to note a plea on part of the organizers for people to practice proper hygene…the fanboy funk wasn’t so bad this year. Ok, let’s get into this!

AMV’S:

There was some consternation this year as it was announced before the con that there would be no Overflow AMV’s. What that meant was that those of us who did not make the cut for the Contest, wouldn’t even get a showing of our AMV’s as in years past. Then, the schedule came out and there was at least ONE showing.

The guys running the showing did us a favor; the asked for the entrants present to come forward so that they could program our AMV’s to be shown first. AND, we got our preferred seating and line-jump passes! Woot! It’s always fun to see your work on the big screen!

To see the winners and my picks for this year, just go to the previous blog post, the list and most of the links are there!

YOSHIDA BROTHERS

http://www.domo.com/yoshidabrothers/index.php

These two brothers from Hokkaido, play the shamisen, what looks like a three string guitar with a box at one end. These guys are amazing! So much so that by the time I left the opening ceremonies to run downstairs to the dealer’s room to get their CD…it was sold out! Here is the video called “Kodo” that was played for us. Check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ron17xFNBf0

LIVE ACTION MOVIES:

I saw more live action movies this year than I normally do. Odd. Anyway. I caught the end of a really bad one, and discovered two really good ones and one really campy, but fun one. And I am going to start in reverse order…

20th Century Boys Part 2

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1181920/

I stumbled onto this one. I did not see part one, but there was plenty of references to the first one, so I wasn’t lost. Basically, Japan is coming under the religious influence of a guy named Friend, after a viral outbreak that was blamed on the hero of the first movie. The heroes of the first movie slowly come back together except for Kenji, along with the excitable girl who is Kenji’s niece. Their goal is to prevent Friend from taking over Japan. It’s very campy, like the manga, but has some surprising serious parts to it as well.

Shinobi

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475723/

This is set in the early days of the unification of Japan and the Tokugawa era. Two ninja clans have been fighting it out with each other for centuries. As Japan becomes unified, warlords no longer need their services…yet the Tokugawa Ieyasu still commands them to fight each other but no reason is given. As the battles continue, the two leaders of the clan fall in love with each other….

Ichi

http://nihongoup.com/blog/ichi-2008/

NOT to be confused with Ichi the Killer. Two totally different movies. Ichi is the blind daughter of a blind swordsman. He gives her up to a special type of orphanage, but still visits her and trains her in swordsmanship. But her primary skill is to be a gozen, a blind shamisen player. However, she is kicked out because it was believed that she had a relationship with a man (forbidden to gozen), when she was actually raped. She wanders the country searching for her father, instead comes upon a village beset with villainous thugs. She meets a real swordsman, who for some reason, cannot draw his sword, but give hima wooden one and he is suddenly the greatest swordsman alive…

Ok, the really bad one. Genghis Khan. A lame attempt to put Khan in a good light. Why does he wage war and slaughter so many? So that his war would end all wars. Pffft… Anyway, the only reason you should watch this is to make fun the of the English dubbing: Travis Willingham, the voice of Roy Mustang the Full Metal Alchemist, dubs the traitorous friend of Khan.

ANIME:

L’Corda D’Oro Primo

http://www.corda-primopasso.com/

I happened to stumble upon this anime while waiting for something else. It’s a fun little anime about a school with an elaborate history of a musical contest. Whenever the school bells chime on their own, it is a signal to hold a musical contest. The contest and the music department have a strange patron: an inspirational “fairy” named Lily who chooses the contestants, but only they can see them, no one else can. The other thing about this story is that of the five contestants, four are boys with incredible musical talent and one girl with absolutely none. Lily gives her a magical violin, but she can only play it when she is inspired. Of course, she begins to be attracted to more than one of the other contestants…

Bamboo Blade

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=8455

You can tell at a convention when an anime is pretty good when at the end of the screening everyone voices disappointment that it’s over. Bamboo Blade got this reaction. This anime is very simple, but very good. A kendo instructor at a private school runs out of money and students. He accepts a bet from a friend to have the girls’ kendo team form each school to a contest, if he wins, he gets free sushi for a year. The only problem is that he only has one girl on his kendo team. As he recruits new members, each one provides unique challenges: one girl has amazing skill but is only influenced by her heroes on tv, another girl is impossibly beautiful with an impossibly ugly boyfriend who she goes psychotic over…you get the idea.

SIDE NOTES:

Now that Otakon is over, I will be going back to an every other week format.

The convention had to be evacuated at one point…

OTAKON 2010 AMV CONTEST WINNERS!!!!

Ok, originally, I was going to do a write-up about Otakon 2010, but I decided to hold off since I wouldn’t be able to match it up with my vlog…that and I need to pay rent which I means longer hours at work. Not much senses in compiling anime and manga if you don’t have a place ot put all that stuff… So, next Monday, come back and read about at Otakon…and give my little vlog some love!

Alright, what I DO have for you, my fellow Otaku, is the list of winners of the Otakon 2010 AMV Contest as well as the ones that I had voted for! I don’t have all of the links for YouTube, but for the winners, I believe you can find them at Anime Music Videos:

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/home/home.php

As always, incredibly talented people created these great AMV’s! It’s no wonder that it gets jam-packed every year! Originally, there wasn’t going to be an Overflow, but saner heads prevailed and at least one session was granted. Ok, enough of my yammering, enjoy the AMV’s!!!!

Ok, here is a list of the AMV’s I voted for this year! Once I get the winners, I will post that ASAP! Hopefully by Tuesday. Ok here are my pics for the 2010 Otakon AMV Contest:

TRAILER/PARODY:

Last Otakon Tip: Wash, Fanboy, Wash!

Ok, here is the annual plea to you fanboys, a desperate wish that I have for you, hoping that THIS year might be the year you may actually listen…

For the love of all that is holy…BATHE!!! WASH!!! PUT ON DEODERANT!!! WASH YOUR TEETH!!! BREATH MINTS!!! ANYTHING!!! ANYTHING!!!

Here some simple steps to be clean and smell good. When washing your hair and body…yes, that means you have to step into a shower or a bathtub and get wet…do the following with soap and shampoo. Yes, you MUST use shampoo for your hair and soap for your body. Simply getting wet will do nothing more than add the stench of mold to your body odor…here is all you have to do:

1. Wash.
2. Lather.
3. Rinse.
4. Repeat.

For oral hygiene you MUST use a toothbrush and toothpaste. Or at the very least, eat a lot of breath mints during the day.

Fanboy funk is a problem. I have seen on the Otakon message boards of a kid offering to share the costs of the room as long as the other person promises to bathe. Last year, I sat next to a nice enough guy in the AMV contest, but every time he moved, I got a pungent scent of his body. This year, there is no overflow AMV’s, so we know the room is going to be packed for the AMV Contest…I’m dreading the amount of fanboy funk that will fill that room…

Ok, now that Public Service Announcement is out of the way and concludes this year’s Otakon Tips. Now on to some more practical con matters….

As always, I will have my black backpack with me. And I will have, inside of my bag every day, packets of different types of Pocky (click on the link down below for my vlog and you will see what I am putting in there). I will be the large guy with prematurely graying hair and a camera. Find me, and if you let me make a short video of you explaining why you like anime/Otakon, you get to reach in and grab one packet. But find me quickly; I will have only so much Pocky per day!!!

OK, just a couple more things. First, come back here, late on Thursday thru Friday. On either Friday or Saturday will be my picks for the AMV contest. There will be a link to a daily video of Otakon, mostly set to music! Sometime next Tuesday or Wednesday there will be a comprehensive blog about Otakon.

Second, go to my vlog: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheUnagiObserver . Pics of what Pocky I will have and I’ve made a brand new song for you guys! The Pocky song!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiBKlD25XKA

Ok, so you’ve paid for your entry to the con, made your hotel reservations, your travel arrangements and when you look into your wallet…you find a barren wasteland worthy of Wekomundo.

One of the most frustrating things for con-goers is the fact that we are gouged in just about any way possible before we even get there! The hotels know we need them, so they can virtually name any price for a room that looks like it came from the original Saw movie. And airlines…those (insert expletive here), I think they’re going to actually charge you for the crappy peanuts they serve!

So it’s difficult and frustrating to go to a con and then be forced to make difficult choices. Do you pay for one DVD, or do you blow everything on a box set? Do buy neko-ears, or do you go for the awesome black, silk ghi if you’re a guy or a beautiful, cherry blossom kimono if you’re a gal (or a dude that likes to dress up)?

The best advice anyone can give you is to simply save and budget. If you know ahead of time what cons you are attending then you already ahead of the game.

Budget yourself. And it is actually easy to do because you already know the five things you are going to spend on; convention entry fee, travel expenses, hotel accommodations, a daily food allowance and purchasing power for the dealer room. The two areas that get least amount of money are food and the dealer room. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

In the months prior to the con (yes, I said months) make it a point to stash away a small amount each time you get paid (or if given an allowance on a regular basis). Have a monetary and calendar goal for each category. You may only need to worry about three or four categories, it depends on your situation. My suggestion is as follows:

1. Convention entry fee: go ahead and pay this upfront. This will be the cheapest cost you will have. That way, this is out of consideration for the rest of your budget.
2. Travel expenses: unless you are flying, this is the second easiest thing to deal with. Gas money. Figure out how much you need to fill up your car. Then figure how many times you may need to fill up the tank. Unless you are far enough away where you may need to stay over a night on your way in, this is all you have to save up for. My suggestion is that you only fly if you live more than a 48 hour road trip away.
3. Hotel accommodations: you will know ahead of time how much it will cost. If you have enough money on hand to put down a room deposit, do it. Make your reservations MONTHS in advance. In doing so, you may get a cheaper rate, it depends. Also, all you need is a bed, a bathroom and possibly wi-fi. You don’t need anymore than that…after all…the idea is that you will be at the con more than your room.
4. Food allowance: you need to eat and drink. Don’t skimp. Bring your own snacks if possible. Find out where the closest convience or grocery stores are and raid them! But you will need more than that, you need to eat at least lunch and dinner. And if possible, do NOT pay for food at the con. You pay way too much for food that isn’t that good and may cause you some intestinal distress. Figure out the cheap eats in the area. Otakon is pretty good about this last part, but they haven’t updated their food map in some time. I’ll get to that later on.
5. Dealer room: ok, you have to have some discipline here. Before you go, figure out what you want to buy and estimate the cost. Include money for that “OMG! Best thing EVAR! I must haves!!!” thing that might just pop up. I am going to give you a dollar amount, it’s what I usually save up for myself: between $350 and $400.

So the idea is that every paycheck or allowance, put aside money for the con. Think of the con as a bill. If you pay your bill, then that’s money that is already gone from your normal paycheck/allowance. It is money that is just sitting in a box, account or whatever (I put mine in an Otakon Nalgene bottle), that you will never touch unless it is to pay for something con-related.

Good luck, I know you can do it!!!

Now on to food….

Ok, as I said before, Otakon gives its goers a map and listing of food places in the immediate area. It really needs updating. So, this past Sunday, I took a quick trip downtown with my camera and made my own list of places. But before I do, let me make one thing clear to my fellow Otakon otaku:

The Burger King is still gone. It is never coming back. Get over it.

Alright, moving on… I used last year’s map from the program (2009, if you have it, this is what I am referencing to ) and started at the Gallery which is right across the street from Harborplace, on Pratt and Calvert. You have to go to the fourth floor to get to the food.

At The Gallery Mall (location 22 on the map), 4th Floor:

Moun Wok – Typical mall, quick service Chinese food, moderately priced.

Sbarro’s – Pizza, pasta salad, a bit expensive if you get more than a a slice and a soda.

Salad Works – good and healthy, but a bit expensive, but can be filling.

McDonald’s – limited menu, that’s right, no value meals. Unless you need a Big Mac to quell your junkie shuffle, just don’t bother.

Now, if you cross the street, you will see Harborplace East and West. They are marked as location 24 on the map. Harborplace East is the one parallel to Pratt Street and West parallel to Light Street on the map.

Harborplace East:

Marble Slab – Ice cream.

Five Guys – Cheap and fast burgers, hot dogs and fires. Good price as well.

Edo Sushi and Grill – Expensive, and not really worth the price, but is one of the closer sushi joints.

Uno’s – The world famous pizzeria, long lines.

Harborplace West, 1st Floor:

Noodles and Company – NEW! Asian noodle dishes, not bad.

Auntie Anne’s – Mainly a pretzel place.

Johnny Rockets – Solid and well-priced hamburgers/fries/onion rings serve 50’s style.

Phillip’s Buffet – Expensive, but pretty good. An end of con experience perhaps.

Oasis – Italian ices, smoothies…cold stuff to eat and drink.

Phillip’s Raw Bar – If you like oysters and claims and quick service crabcakes, this is your best bet, but expensive.

Phillip’s Resturant – Don’t waste your time. A combo of the other two.

Vaccaro’s – Oh. My. God. Take the time, if you happen to be there, to order a canoli. Please, indulge yourself. Let me put it to you this way…fine-dining resturants in Baltimore order canolis from Vaccaro’s and feature it on their dessert menus…

2nd Floor:

Thai Noodle Bar – just as it sounds

Chicken Gourmet – Think of every chicken joint in any food court that serves burbon chicken and you get a good idea.

Brown Sugar – Fast food version of BBQ.

New York Deli – yet another “NY Deli-style” place.

Roman Delight – Pizza and pasta.

Subway – Might actually be your best and affordable bet.

Hooter’s – Of course you’re only going there for the wings, right?

Bank of America Building, or the Skywalk Mall, located on the map as location 6. It is the closest place withfood to the convention center, but it has limited food choices.

Skywalk Mall, if entering form the Skywalk:

Café 100 – “NY Deli-style” sit down or carry out.

Going to the street-level entrance:

Blimpie’s – Like a Subway.

Chef Paolino – Pizza, burgers, sandwiches, sit down or carry out. Not bad, really.

Basically, your best bet for quick food is to go too Harborplace West. You can actually get there by walking the Skywalk all the way across. The Skywalk is accessible by going to the 2nd floor of the Main Hall (where the fountains are). Right past the escalators is the exit to the Skywalk. You can either go directly to the Skywalk Mall, take it down to the street level, or take it to Harborplace West.

As far as decnt sushi goes…I will name three places. In Harborplace East is the Edo Sushi and Grill (overpriced and meh), go up Charles Street, a block past the Monaco Hotel is Geisha Sushi (S8 on themap) that is actually pretty good (stay away from the coffee marinated salmon, tho) and lastly, my favorite and way up on Charles Street (S9 on the map) is Minato’s; the best sushi in the city, and I am happy that I live in the building behind it.

NEW!!! NEW!!! NEW!!! NEW!!! NEW!!!

Ok, for those of you who don’t know, there is limited, free bus service in Baltimore now. It is called the Circulator. Right now there are two lines the Orange and the Purple. A bus shows up at each stop every ten minutes or so. And…THEY ARE FREE!!!!

The Orange line goes along Pratt and Lombard, with some twists and turns, and runs east-west. I believe it runs three blocks west of the convention center and runs as far west as the Aquarium.

The Purple line runs up Charles Street to the train station and loops back down St. Paul (one stop outside my building, whoot!). If you get off at the Light St. stop, you are only one block away from the convention center. Look at the links below and may it out for yourself. Best thing about the Purple line? It takes you by Geisha and Minato’s!!!

Be sure to visit the links section!

Ok, until next week, for the final tip installment of personal hygene. That means you, fanboy!

SIDE NOTES:

On another forum, Anime Music Video.Org, it has been announced by the AMV director for Otakon that there will most likely be any AMV Overflow viewings. This sucks on so many levels. Hopefully they will change their minds before putting out the programming schedule, which should be any day now.

Well, it’s been a nightmare the past few days, I actually had the blog written….

…and I lost it during another pc crash.

On top of that, finishing the video took a long time. Again, the pc was running really slow…I had to try several times before it finally finished at 2:12am this morning. The upload to YouTube is taking its time as well. It may be time to invest in something new…

Anyway…the video will be up and it covers what I would’ve had written here, so…go watch it!

Either search in YouTube by typing in TheUnagiObserver, or click on this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDxhRVFKs-I

If the link doesn’t work, just cut and paste. Just a warning: I was still sick when doing this vid, I sound kinda funny. The upshot is that the vid is full of images and vids of Otakon from 2005 – 2009! If you are Otakon-goer, you just might see yourself!!!! If you do, let me know!

On a side note, check out the Otakon website ( www.otakon.com ). There is some VERY important information there (not joking, if you are going you need to know).

Ok, next time will be about money and food!!!!!

Sorry...update next week!

Much like Monique from the webcomic Sinfest (www.sinfest.net), I feel like crap.

Between feeling like death, a busy workweek, bad internet connections and crap content…I haven’t been able to get anything worthwhile together. But, you will next week, late on the evening of the 12th!!!

Until then, enjoy this…I can’t tell if it’s creepy or funny…you decide…

Otakon Tip #1

It is that time of year where Otakon is right around the corner! It’s happening from July 30th through August 1st! Of course, the pre-registration, for those of you who paid ahead, occurs on July 29th. And that is what today’s Okaton tip is about today.

Ok, as we all know, this is when I start giving out tips on Otakon. It’s for those of you who are new the convention, and for those of you who really should know better. I realize it’s a bit repetitive from year to year, but hey, better forewarned than looking like a shmuck.

OTAKON TIP #1: The Pre-Registration Line

Listen…its summer. It’s hot. Otakon is in Baltimore, a city. Cities have a tendency to amplify the heat. Yet every year, we all flock down on the Thursday before the con to get our passes. So let’s review some Pre-Reg line tips.

You don’t actually have to be the first in line. Really. You don’t. Unless, of course you are one of those people who feel the need to get whatever you need ASAP or just to be able to say that you got there first. Kind of like waiting in line for the newest iPhone. So unless you are one of those people, you literally have until around nine at night to pickup your pass.

If you’re like me, you sort of consider the pre-reg line as a part of the convention. I usually bring my camera, take my pictures and video and then make a YouTube vid later that evening. Still, even I don’t show up until somewhere around five or six. I wait no more than hour or so and I get my wondrous pass. The guys running Otakon know what they are doing…there’s no need to camp out on the sidewalk, in the heat, pollution, dying a slow death of dehydration, because…

Odds are some of you didn’t bring water.

This is something I don’t get. You know it’s hot. The line is long. And if you decide to cosplay…you just upped your misery. I always carry extra water, not just for myself, but because I almost always find that poor person who is so red-faced, shuffling their feet, arms limp, tongue hanging out until they trip over their costume and fall and not get back up. This year, I swear, I am going to tape you first, then help you…like a PSA for YouTube.

Also, don’t show up drunk or drink while in line. Aside from the afore mentioned health risks of dehydration…you will most likely look very, very foolish…and wind upon YouTube to be laughed at by some fanboy in Japan. Seriously, being sober is a good idea, because some of these girls in fukus that you are hitting on may actually be boys. Again…you run the risk of being immortalized on YouTube.

Next week are tips for you cosplayers!

SIDE NOTES:

kanon is appearing at Otakon! I may have to check this out at the rave. Just watch for a big guy spinning out of control! http://www.otakon.com/guests.asp#kanon

I have some vids I made that I think are funny. Or it could just be me. Debating to send some in for the Fan Parodies.

Ok, as always, give me vlog some love. This week I talk a little bit about Pre-Reg, the best sha cha beef in the area…and my favorite megaphone guy; the Creature Feature Preacher!

My AMV and Otakon!

So remember how I was joking about the trials and tribulations of creating an AMV? Yeah, well, it pretty much happened to me. Without going into too much detail go ahead and click on the link to see a rather lame AMV:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X9y7-MIVDQ

Well, hopefully I can get a better one next year. But, I go confirmation of its delivery and hopefully it passes technical muster and make it to the Overflow.

GETTING CLOSER TO OTAKON 2010!!!!!!!

Ok, we all know what that means, right? That means Otakon 2010 will be the topic of discussion from here until the con is over! And as I do every year, I will provide some convention wisdom and tips for those who are new to the con…as well as to those who should know better…. So starting next Sunday, I will be posting on a weekly basis (every Sunday).

And then I will post links to the videos I will be making of Otakon. One per day! Starting at Pre-Reg on 7/29/10, a Thursday! They will be uploaded at the end of each day, so they will be on YouTube pretty late at night.

Anime Music Videos!

UPDATED!!! Go here for the vlog version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BliLVVY-3t0

Wonderful to watch, great to debate over, to give adulations or criticisms to…but to create one…for some, a delight, for others…it is their very own, personal “Heart of Darkness” movie.

Under a deadline. Rushed to create. Picking the clips. Picking the music, the audio. Synching it, sequencing…the PC or Mac crashes….have to start over…even more rushed…trying to get that one, that one perfect moment of music and image…staying up…having Red Bull-induced hallucinations…which are not much better than beer-induced hallucinations…and a the end…at the end…at the blessed end of it all…

You’ve made an AMV. Congratulations. Hopefully YouTube won’t block it for music copyright violations.

Ok, seriously, whether you make a good one or a horrifically bad one, it’s fun to do. Especially if you are a creative person, you really like anime and music. Also, I don’t know about you all, but when I can post one to YouTube, or whatever, I love seeing the hits I get and from where they come from. But then there are the competitions.

Again, this year, I will be submitting an AMV to the Otakon contest. And I have to get moving on this because the deadline is June 20th. At this point, I can tell you that it will most likely be a CowBoy BeBop AMV. I’ve narrowed it down to three songs/concepts. Once it’s done, you all will get to see it. But until then, a few comments on AMV’s.

Everyone has their own process and equipment when making an AMV. But there are some unwritten rules that should be followed. Never take an AMV that is not yours and incorporate elements into your own. That’s just rude. Don’t make it too long. People want to be entertained, not bored to tears. And please, please, be aware of over-used anime and songs. If I ever see another Naruto/Linkin Park AMV…I will strangle somebody.

Ok, enough of me. Allow me to offer some links to AMV’s that I personally like. Some of them were finalists at previous Otakons, a couple may be my own personal creations! Anyway…enjoy!

MORIMOTO'S!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEXT UPDATE WILL BE JUNE 7TH...ABOUT ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS!!!!

As part of a celebration this past weekend, I had reservations at MORIMOTO RESTURANT!!!!

Morimoto’s is located in Philadelphia, in the downtown area. Since it was a couple of hours from Baltimore, I figured I’d make a weekend of it with my friends. I have been thinking and saving up for the experience for a few months now. While expensive, it was completely worth it and I strongly urge anyone who likes Japanese food and fusion-style cuisine to save their money and go there at least once in their lives!

Morimoto is a chef from Japan who made his name in that country by taking traditional Japanese cuisine and adapting to modern techniques, flavors and ingredients. Morimoto is also the same Iron Chef of both the Japanese show (his record being 16-7-1) and the American show (his record so far is 16-10-1, I think). He actually has four restaurants open in America. And I went to his first one this past Saturday.

On first glance, you will miss the entrance to Morimoto’s because it almost totally nondescript! It is simply a white façade that gently arcs upwards. The door right next to the entrance leads to what looks like a movie-set, run-down kung-fu dojo. The small sign to the left of the door is circular and embedded into the façade and simply states, “morimoto”. But as you watch, the letters change into different neon colors.

As you go in you greeted with an awesome sight. Immediately to the left there is a picture of a Japanese woman’s face that changes into a smile as you walk by it. Behind it is a set of stairs that leads upstairs to the lounge (more on that latter). To the right is the hostesses kiosk and another set of stairs that goes down to where the bathrooms and a private dinning area are. There is a large, glossy black sculpture that is very interesting to look at, but I have no idea what it is supposed to be. The ceiling is low a this point until the hostess leads you to your table…

As you are seated, the ceiling dramatically vaults easily to 20’ high. It undulates, like waves, all the way to the back of the restaurant, which seems like a mile away. It looks like it is made of bamboo. On either side of the place, is a sculpted wall of concentric circles, dull white, reflecting the light. Along each wall, is a raised platform where booths for two are set. The middle section is a visual treat unto itself. Each booth consists of a large table that can easily seat six and with two very comfortable, padded benches. The booth dividers are fogged plexi-glass that changes colors, just like the sign outside!

We decided to be adventurous and ordered the higher price point omakase. Omakase is, simply, the chef’s choice of items. Here, in America, it is a way of saying a tasting menu for a Japanese restaurant. As it was explained to us by our waiter, Steve, the difference in price points is not the amount of food, but the fact that most of the dishes will be off the menu. We decided on being adventurous.

The omakase consisted of 5 tastings, a refresher, two entrees and the desert. One of my friends also ordered a beverage omakase where she received a drink normally not served (and in smaller quantities so the patron won’t get swacked immediately) with each course served. When making the reservations, we mentioned that one of our party had an allergy to bivalves. Before we reminded Steve of that, he immediately quipped that the omakase that evening would only be slightly different for that person.

Before getting into the omakase, let me briefly describe the beverage omakase. Each drink that came out had a sixty-second dissertation on why it was special. Sometimes it was a wine, other times a sake. The one I tasted was sake that had no bite to it, other than a taste of honeysuckle. The reason for that was because during the de-hulling process, up to 50% of the hull is removed, most sake had less hull removed from the rice since it is the hull that gives sake its bite, and sometimes taste.

The first course was a toro tartare (tuna). Mixed into the tartar was caviar and tobiko. It was served as a column inside of a tea cup, in a pool of mirin sauce. We were instructed to use the tiny spoon and get a very small portion of wasabi and to spoon downwards so that all flavors were represented. My initial reaction was to order six more for myself.

The second course was raw oysters. There were three were still in their shells and placed on ice. The first oyster had a slight Tabasco flavor, but you couldn’t see any of the red sauce. The second oyster was slightly squirted with lemon and had a piece of cilantro on it. The third oyster, my favorite, had slightly squeezed lime and a thinly sliced pepper on it. This was the only course where our friend had to have something different: cod soup, which had a wonderfully salty broth.

The third course was white fish capriccio. The fish was cooked in a smoky, virgin olive oil mix, thinly sliced and melted in your mouth. The table voted later that this was the best course.

The fourth course was a micro-salad with chive vinaigrette and a serving of four pieces of sashimi; mackerel and salmon. Micro-salad is something I normally do not eat, but the dressing made it delicious! The sashimi was amazing as well. Normally, mackerel has a very strong taste. Not so much here, instead, it was like the salmon. It was such an amazing quality…all pieces were simply buttery.

The fifth course was nigiri sushi. Included were white tuna, salmon, tuna fish…and while that seems boring, you have to understand the quality of the fish. I have never, ever had such quality. The only exception is the white fish served at Minato’s, here in Baltimore.

The refresher course was to cleanse the palate. We were each served a tall and thin tumbler filled with a slight soda infused with mint and almond flavors. It was delicious and certainly did the trick.

The first entrée was a lobster dish. It was cut in half, lengthwise, and served with herbs. On the side were vegetables and an uzu dipping sauce (white, creamy sauce designed to enhance flavor). We enjoyed it, but we felt it was the weakest dish. Only because once you’ve had Maine lobsters cooked the Maine way, it’s really hard to call anything else better.

The second entrée was kobe beef. Oh. My. God. Thin strips seared, seared with a very slight soy sauce and pickled vegetables. Melted in the mouth. Mmmm…kobe beef…mmmm….

Desert was a small piece of chocolate cake topped with strawberry shortcake and with a side of mint-flavored, dense foam and a sweet, spring melon dressing. Very nice way to end the omakase.

After paying our bill, we decided to go up to the lounge. Like the rest of the place, it had a nice, pleasing bamboo ceiling. Half of the walls were lined with couches and small, padded rests. It is a very cozy and intimate room. The bar is quite small. No more than twenty people can fit there and still be comfortable. The most appealing aspect is the open window that looks down on the restaurant. The lounge is where I took the above picture from.

One last comment before I leave the subject. Morimoto’s clearly takes pride and care in choosing its ingredients and the creation of dishes. That same attitude also applies when they hire people. The service we received was beyond the pale. There are no real words to describe it other than this: my napkin fell off my leg and onto the floor, I got as far as looking down before the hostess magically appeared and issued me a new one and our waiter, Steve…was simply amazing in his knowledge and erstwhile concern that all was well with our table.

Morimoto’s is pretty expensive. But worth every, single penny!

FMA: Brotherhood Revisited

SPOILER ALERT!

If you haven’t seen the last couple episodes of FMA: Brotherhood, or the series at all, please know that I will be talking about it. You can read the next paragraph, but you may want to stop there.

Ok, some house-keeping items. I am doing a mini-blog tonight. There will be another post next MONDAY. Usually I do this every other week or so, but next week’s blog is going to be pretty cool…I think so anyway. I will be in Philadelphia this upcoming weekend, celebrating (sorry, personal, can’t tell ya!). And I have a reservation this Saturday at a really cool place called…wait for it…Morimoto. That’s right, I will be doing the omakase menu (kind of like a tasting menu) at Morimoto. Owned and operated by, that’s right, you guessed it, Chef Morimoto of the Japanese and American Iron Chef fame! Take a look at the website:

http://www.morimotorestaurant.com/

This going to be so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SPOILER ALERT!!! Don’t read past this! You’ve been warned!

Ok, as you know, I am trying to like this series. I have certain issues though…

For example, I hate the way they’ve diminished Izumi (Teacher). So annoyed. They show her lavishing affection on her mountain of a husband to the point where it is sickening…they even use the soft, pastel background shot with flowers and hearts. And worse, they’ve totally altered and destroyed the iconic Izumi scene.

You know the scene. Ed is fighting Greed and not doing so well. Izumi busts in with her kicking white dress and sandals, destroy a wall. Greed asks who she is and she utters one of the best known lines in anime, “I’M PISSED OFF!!!”

Now, the same scene happens again only with a new, different and lame tag line. This time, when Greed asks who she is, she now responds, in a dumpy outfit, wearing bathroom sandals with WC printed on them (WC stands for Water Closet, or bathroom), yells out, “Who am I? I’M A HOUSEWIFE!!!”

Housewife? Really? That’s just not…badass. And Izumi is as badass as they come.

The upshot is Major Armstrong. He’s been getting a lot of play in the series. He’s more connected to the brothers than in the previous series. While still somewhat cheesey with his ripping off of shirts (he’s actually made fun of this),
He appears more crafty, intelligent…and you actually get to see him fight. His fighting skills are more alluded to in the original series than actually seen. The opposite is different in Brotherhood. The Major can kick some serious ass. So far his battle with Scar was prolonged and his battle with one of the chimera’s that can change into a bull was pretty incredible. So at least there’s that….

Ok, remember, come back here for a review of Morimoto!

SIDE NOTES:

OK, so my little vlog called The Unagi Observer has done something interesting. At best, these vlogs received 8 hits each, except for one…which has over 300. The topics displayed were webcomics, Balticon and Puke Boy. So…I am thinking of a redirection for the vlog….perhaps more towards fanboy type of stuff, with some Asian culture thrown in. For example, not only will you see Morimoto here…but come late Tuesday…you can check out the vlog version!!! In the meantime, give my channel some love!

Will I Get in Trouble if I.....

Lady Imbri sent me a link about a possible case of plagerism. The picture on the left is from Bleach...the one of the right...is not. Simmons was accused of plagerism back in February. You decide for yourself. Looks a little too alike, and I really doubt it's an hommage to Tito Kubo. But it raises an interesting question...will I get in trouble if I use, a song, story line, anime, basically someone else's work to create something fun and neat.

Well, according to the ninja-monkey-copyright-lawyers at MySpace and YouTube, the answer is an inconsistent yes. How many times have I thrown up an AMV and either the song, or some other aspect of the content comes under scrutiny and I had to remove it? One too many times. It is regrettable that one of my favorite bands, Weezer, is highly active is squashing creative content. But there is a point to this; it IS their work. This how they make their money and pay their bills. But I feel that at some point, they can ease up a bit...if I am not making any money out of this myself, why whould they care?

Just like when people make fan art or fan-fiction, sure we are basing our own creative liscence on something already created. It can be called an hommage...and most of the time, the original creators may be amused or honored by it. It's the same thing with AMV's; a person felt that a certain anime and a song really fit and create something visually stunning or amusing. While I do get annoyed at the ninja-monkey-copyright-lawyers. There is something else to be considered...intellectual and creative rights.

Artists put a lot of hardwork into their craft. It is theirs. Anyone who has taken time to create something original, and to have it put into the public eye...that's a lot of work! I remember a few years ago, one of the last writing assingments I did was to convince an opera audience why dressing up the cast in WWI uniforms and dress actually did relate to the opera, "Faust". It took me a lot time, effort and research...I remember the morning of the deadline...it was 4am and I didn't realize it. Point is, it was my work, my effort, and I, by being the creator, deserved the credit (and criticism). The same goes for the creators of manga and anime.

Most artists/creators are fine with hommages to their work. But not always. Otakon has a rule for its AMV contest: don't use English dubs, original Japanese actors voices can be used, however. The main reason for this is that Otakon may have a guest voice actor...and he or she would probably not be too happy if their voice was used on an AMV...largely because they aren't getting paid for it. It reminds me of when Patrick Stuart showed up at a premiere at the the theatre I worked at the time; ten feet before I could introduce myself, an intern got in his face and snapped a pic without his permission...his image is his bread and butter, he was mad and left before I could speak to him (btw, he was playing Othello in DC then, yes, I said Othello).

But for the most part, creators and artists enjoy hommages. So, the answer to the question is no...you won't really get into trouble unless you plagerize. Make sure you aren't trying to profit too handsomely off of someone else's work and above all...make sure that whatever you do, give credit where credit is due. Simply doing that can prevent an hyper-active manga artist from shoving is pens and pencils where the sun don't shine.

So...hommage away!!

Cosplaying - The Wonder, The Addiction

So, a very weird and creepy thing happened. I was having a hard time trying to figure out what to write, so I decided to come back to a subject I haven't talked about in awhile: cosplaying. Not wanting to basically write the same thing twice. I went backinto my Word file and looked it up. After getting the gist of what I wrote previously, I clicked on properties to see how long ago I wrote. Keep in mind that tonight's blog is being written on April 11th. The previous coplaying blog entry was written on...wait for it...April 11, 2008. I should paly the lottery tomorrow....

Cosplay. It's fun. It's addictive. It's hard work. It's a religion.

I've ripped on coplayers in the past, but in a loving fashion. Unless you are one of those who ignores your own body type and inisist upon dressing up like Faye Valentine or Light Yamagi. Please, just don't. It hurts the rest of us. Seriously. Despite that, cosplayers are a very energetic and playfull bunch. They have to be.

The amount of time and work that goes into a fan's costume actually exceeds the amout of time it is worn. To be a cosplayer and to create a costume, you must be one of two types of individuals. One is a person with seamstress/tailor/costume designer skills. The other is a person who has access to a seamstress/tailor/costume designer. All coplayers, however, share the same traits. Creativity, energy to wear their costumes...and must love being in the public's eye and have their picture taken every 90 seconds or so. Being a flirt also helps.

Costumes are quite often intricate. Details are important. Getting the rank right on a uniform, or a special symbol, is important as there will ALWAYS be that fanboy or fangirl who actually will call you out if you get it wrong. As with any costume design, there has to be some knowledge onhow to plan to create a costume. This may include renderings, the use of body stands, continuous measurements...and the hunt for the right color material.

A costume can also be quite restrictive depending upon who you are portraying. Say your character has wings, extended body features, or the character you are emulating...simply does not havea humanoid form. This brings an element of construction to the table. How do you create a costume to attatch to yourself and still be able to walk around? Not an easy task. Just to give you an idea; see the above photo? I am six feet tall. That costume is easily eight to nine feet tall. The person inside? Tiny.

Lastly, there is the make-up and wig element. Like anythign else with the costume, there has to be consistency. You can't dress up as L and wear a long, blond wig. Just doesn't work. Also, make up has to be maintained. Unless you have a professional make-up artist in your group. Theatrical and photo make-up artists make sure their work can stand up under hot lights. Regular make-up jobs? Not so much. I'm still waiting for someone to cosplay Scar at Otakon...I want to see the design on the right arm!

Wigs are devices of torture. I know this from my years of working in theatre. I've never actually worn a wig, but I've seen the application. First, you have to decide how you are going to wear a wig. Straight on your head, or will you use a stretch cap to attatch the wig to? Either way, you are going to have bed hair when you take the wig off. And it's itchy. And it's hot. Very hot.

Despite the horrors and hard work and the wearing of demonic devices...they still are able to run around, act in character...and always are ready to pose for your camera. How long do they practice their poses? How often does an attractive cosplayer endure leering fanboys? Or the creepy older guy with a Nikon camera? You gotta hand it to the cosplayers. They love the attention, so give it to them! They've earned it!

Hopefully, this year, security won't decide that I am carrying contraband in my backpack and keep me out of the Masquerade. Oh, and to the guy walking around as MegaMan with the skintight suit...no one wants to see the outline of your junk....
