This past weekend I went to the Baltimore Comicon!!!!
Not quite Otakon, but fun, especially if you are a toy or comic book collector. Instead of obsessing on anime…people obsess on comics and things related to them, feeding their own junkie cravings. Make no mistake: comic book fans are just as addicted to their desires at otaku are. It’s just for some, like myself, comic books was simply a gateway drug to the more insidious and all-consuming anime habit!
Seriously, it was a lot of fun. This year was pretty well run. The organizers tried to make things a bit more centralized and easy to get to. All you had to do was got to the Charles Street Lobby (where the water fountains are) to pickup passes or to purchase tickets at the box office. That’s right; there is a box office underneath the escalator. Did you know that? Panels were directly above in the meeting rooms at the top of the escalator. Also, it made it easier to get in and out via the Skywalk.
As always, there were hundreds of people with tote bags, carts loaded with boxes, scurrying from stall to stall, feverishly looking from their list of oh-dear-god-I-must-have-this-to-complete-my-collection items, practically throwing their money at the happy merchants (or their dealer, depending if you view this as an addiction or not). There were quite a few people dressed up; Iron Man, Batman, the Joker, Harlequin, Deadpool, you name it. And the toys…the wonderful toys!!!
Of course, my favorite part is the independent comic book artists. A lot of cool stuff this year. Some real good talent out there! But the thing about this year that was really fun was that I got to bring my nephew to his first comic book convention.
He was a bit overwhelmed.
I would be, too. It’s a lot to take in. I looked down at him after being there for a minute and I saw the look on his face that seemed to suggest data overload. I discovered, however, that while he may not be a comic book aficionado…he may be a collector of toys. He really liked that…and the sword vendors. Can you blame him? What boy doesn’t want to hold a katana blade in his hand?

Due to the intervention of things from my real life, I am finding it easier to post on Tuesday evenings now. So, starting from now on, there will be a post every other week on Tuesdays!
I know I keep threatening to show up at Katsucon and never do. But because of the dates this year…I might be able to, finally!!! Woot!!!
